What Does A Digital Marketing Manager Do?
Just a heads up, this post is specifically for individuals interested in learning about the duties of a digital marketing manager...
You may have noticed a lot of job opportunities in your area for digital marketing managers or maybe you're just looking to take it to the next level. Regardless, this post will get you up-to-date on what a digital marketing manager does.
IMPORTANT: If you're not currently in digital marketing but would like to be, I highly recommend you check out this post: How To Get A Digital Marketing Job
1. Manage the digital marketing strategy
Yea, it's pretty straightforward. The digital marketing manager will create and oversee the entire digital marketing strategy
Here's a list of areas the digital marketing manager will oversee:
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Paid Search / Paid Social Advertising
- Content Marketing
- Email Marketing
- Digital Sales Funnel
2. Act as a liaison between specialists and 'higher-ups'
As a digital marketing manager, it will be your job to act as a liaison between your team of specialists and the 'higher-ups' (VP, C-Level executives, etc..).
In addition to being the liaison, you will likely also become the 'the shield' for your team. When the client or 'higher-ups' are giving you a rough time about something your team has done or how you're not reaching the appropriate Key Performance Indicators - you'll shield your team from the harsh feedback.
Now, anyone can shield someone from feedback. But, where you will shine as a digital marketing manager is being able to restructure feedback into actionable strategies and tasks for your team
3. Manage a team
As mentioned in #3, you will be responsible for the work done by your team.
The better your management skills and relationship with the team, the more successful both you and them will be.
Since you'll be managing a team, you're going to need to know 'enough' about each of your specialist's expertise in order to correctly guide them. You won't need to be an expert (that's what they're there for) but you need to know the basics.
If you don't learn the basics, you'll constantly run into problems with your team about problems that could have been prevented, had you given them better direction.
If you consistently give your team bad direction, the culture in your department might start getting sour. Why? Because your team will start to question the value you bring to the table, question your authority, and possibly go behind your back to your manager or 'higher-ups'.
Which makes you look like you can't manage your team.
Overall, the digital marketing manager does exactly what the name says - they manage the digital marketing strategy.
The digital marketing manager duties listed in this post does not apply 100% of the time. Every employer is different and some will add additional duties based on what's needed. While rare, you may also find the occasional marketing manager job posting that has reduced duties, and a salary that represents the job title.
So, that is a quick overview of what a digital marketing manager does. Leave all of your questions using the comment form at the bottom of this page and I'll reply as soon as possible.
